Eddie Haskell Talking About Music
---------------------------------
Here’s a new mix that’s got no mashups, little dance music and only a small amount of actual mixing. It’s more a collection of songs than a mix, really. I call it Personal Stash because the tunes are mostly old favorites of mine. Not typical mix material for me, but in most cases it’s stuff I’ve listened to for years. It’s not for everyone, but I love it.
PLEASE NOTE: This mix is not suitable for children and probably isn’t work safe. It contains VERY BAD language –- and I do mean very, very bad –- though it’s mostly contained to one song. It also has songs featuring commentary about whether children born to interracial couples are more susceptible to crack attacks. And songs with speculation as to whether Pablo Picasso was ever called an a--hole. And songs with statements that seem to condone or promote drug use. And songs with depictions of God as having something of an attitude. And songs featuring a tuba, flute and/or french horn section.
DJ Riko - Personal Stash (right-click and save-as to download)
Mercury Rev
– Something For Joey
My Bloody Valentine – Emptiness Inside
Big Stick – Crack Attack
Flash and the Pan – Midnight Man
MC 900 Foot Jesus – Born With Monkey Asses
William Shatner – Together
Adam Ant – Here Comes the Grump
Great Lakes – Virgil
jennyanykind – You Better Get Right With God
Yo La Tengo – Drug Test
Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me (Susan Anway vocals)
Beach Boys – Feel Flows
Bostich – Polaris
Burning Sensations – Pablo Picasso
And here's me yammering about the songs:
Mercury
Rev – Something For Joey
This song shouldn’t work so well. It’s got sweeping drums, flutes,
horns, guitar distortion and other noise –- all the makings for an overblown,
self-indulgent mess. Instead, it’s an epic romp that I always enjoy. It’s
from the band’s second album, Boces (1993).
My
Bloody Valentine – Emptiness Inside
Every time I listen to this song, I can’t decide what I like best about
it. There’s the MBV guitar drone, and I’m a sucker for that. There
is the best “ooh” backing vocals ever. There’s the manic drumming.
I want to listen to it again. It’s from the Feed Me With Your Kiss EP
(1988)
Big
Stick – Crack Attack
When this came out in 1987, it was the craziest song I’d ever heard, and
I think it still holds the title. It was shocking and outrageous at the time
and, thanks to the political correctness movement, is even more shocking and
outrageous today. A friend had the 12-inch when it was released, then he left
town and took it with him. I hunted for my own copy for years, then one day
a couple years ago I stumbled across one in the dollar bin at a local used record
store. It’s one of the best dollars I’ve ever spent.
Flash
and the Pan – Midnight Man
I’ve always liked the cool vibe on this song. And the drums, too, as simple
as they are. This came out in 1984, and was mixed by Francois Kevorkian and
Ron St. Germain.
MC
900 Foot Jesus – Born With Monkey Asses
I’ve listened to this song a zillion times and it’s still a jaw-dropper.
It may have been the first one I’d heard that featured spoken word samples
mixed with funky beats. I’d love to know the story behind the “vocals”
on this. It’s from the CD version of the first MC 900 Foot Jesus record,
Hell With The Lid Off (1990).
William
Shatner – Together
This isn’t very old, having come out in 2004, but what the heck. The music
is done by Lemon Jelly, who knew just how to make a Shatner song that’s
beautiful without being campy. It also seemed like a good cleanser after the
Monkey Asses tune.
Adam
Ant – Here Comes the Grump
Another tune with many fine elements, particularly the vocal harmonizing and
rolling chorus. From Adam Ant’s first solo record, Friend or Foe (1982).
Great
Lakes – Virgil
Any song named “Virgil” is going to catch my attention because Virgil
is my grandfather’s name. Luckily, the song is a good one. The Virgil
in this tune can’t hold conversations, has no choice but to refuse invitations.
But don’t feel bad for Virgil. He’s a portrait, not a person. It’s
from the band’s self-titled debut, released in 2000.
jennyanykind
– You Better Get Right With God
jennyanykind is a great band out of North Carolina. This track is from their
“Revelator” album (1996), which I highly recommend. I’ve seen
them live a couple of times and the guitar player is simply amazing. They write
good songs, too.
Yo
La Tengo – Drug Test
This probably isn’t my favorite Yo La Tengo song, but it’s the one
I chose for this mix. I sped it up a little bit because the band plays it with
a faster tempo live, and I like it that way. It’s from the President Yo
La Tengo album, released in 1989.
Magnetic
Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me
This song isn’t all that rare –- it was covered by !!! earlier this
year –- but this version is. It is from the “OH MERGE” compilation
and features vocals by Susan Anway instead of Stephin Merritt, and her voice
adds a new feeling to the song. A better feeling, if you ask me. From 1994.
Beach
Boys – Feel Flows
My favorite Beach Boys song. A little bit trippy, a little bit of a rocker,
a whole lot of good. It’s from “Surf’s Up,” released
in 1971.
Bostich
– Polaris
This is from the first Nortec Collective compilation of electronic music from
Tijuana, The Tijuana Sessions Volume 1 (2001) and it’s one of the all-time
stormers. It features a tuba, and one of the best breakdowns of any song ever.
Burning
Sensations – Pablo Picasso
Sure it’s a silly song, but it’s a fun one so I included it. It’s
from the soundtrack to Repo Man, which came out in 1984 and is a favorite movie
of mine, though it kinda falls apart in the last 20 minutes or so.
